Captain Mikel and Backlash Charters, of Destin, Florida believe that fun and fishing should go together. They go out of their way to help youngsters have a great experience. Our family enjoyed a fun-filled day aboard the Backlash and we would like to share with you a little of our adventure in case you are thinking of introducing your family to a deep-sea fishing experience.

Fish With the Best

Let me tell you some of the things that contributed to our fun outing and helped us conclude that we were fishing with the best in the business…and more importantly, that we had selected the best charter boat and captain for families. Chris, the deck hand and first mate put us at ease immediately. It was obvious that he is knowledgeable and experienced and he is great with kids! No time was wasted as we headed to deep water. Chris began to teach us everything we needed to know and got us set up with the tackle and gear necessary for the first of many catches. He even baited our hook…a great relief to the kids as well as my wife! Once we reached the first of Captain Mikel’s secret fishing spots, our catches were rapid fire…one fish after another! As we reached each prime fishing spot we listened for instructions…”Drop your hook to 140’…count to ten…”and as promised we landed numerous amberjack. In another location we reeled in red snapper. Backlash Charters specializes in 30-50 pound fish…that will give you a whale of a fight!

Good Equipment Helps

The Backlash comes equipped with the best high tech fish finding sonar. Combine that with Captain Mikel’s knowledge of twelve hundred reef sights and you are bound to catch a lot of fish! Rod holders on board were a help to the youngsters as they fought the big fish…not all boats have these. And of course the basics are provided too… from your fishing license to ice!

Fair Prices

While Backlash Charters charges a bit more you will soon realize that you are paying for a true deep sea fishing experience. It takes fuel to reach Captain Mikel’s secret fishing spots in deep water and that is expensive! You’ll notice that many boats take their customers out just off shore and the end result is very different. When you return from your fishing experience and compare your catch with that of other charters you will realize that you paid for the very best and it was worth it!

Great Experience

We found the six hour trip to be about right for our family with a ten year old and a twelve year old. It seems Captain Mikel thought of everything…even video games to help the kids pass the time on the trip back to the dock. Our family had a great time and has memories to last a lifetime…although we are sure to book another adventure!

Have you ever seen an ad for a charter boat service that seemed like a great price? Then thinking you were getting a bargain booked the charter trusting the advertisement. You arrive to find a boat that has not been well maintained and the cabin may not even have air-conditioning or other basic features you would expect on a private charter. Most of these do not even have adequate fishing finding equipment and then it gets worse. The boat does not even take you where the fish are. Due to the expense of gas they do not even take you too far out. Thus your trip that was a bargain ends up being four hours of what John Latham (a guy that booked such a trip) said ” was pure misery”. John Latham said,” the trip was a real scam”. It was hot and very noisy. This was the first trip deep sea fishing trip he had ever taken his 11 year old son on. He had hoped it would be a memorable trip and he could see the joy in his son’s eyes as he lands a good size fish. However this is not what happened.

A Bad Fishing Trip

On this trip; John says, “the charter barely got to what most would even say is deep sea fishing”. The whole time they only caught a few bait types of fish. “Then my son finally hooked a Red Fish”, John says. However the deck hand grabs the rod out of his hand and reeled it in. “My son almost looked disappointed because he did not feel he had actually caught the fish”, John exclaims.  John describes, “the trip as a scam compared to how the flyer portrayed the charter”. He said, “this is really best described as bait and switch”.

Beware Charter Boat Scams

The bottom line is it takes a few hundred dollars of gas for a charter boat to take you out and back to where the best sites are to catch some good quality fish. Nice boats cost a lot to buy and maintain. Thus if you do the math yourself then when you see an ad for discount deep sea fishing; then you will realize it’s a scam. Charter Boat Fishing especially with your family should be a memory you will cherish for a lifetime.

Charter Fishing Destin the Right Way!

The Backlash Fishing team is committed to making your fishing adventure a real enjoyment. I was fortunate to book my son Tyler first trip aboard the Backlash. He now cannot wait until he can go again. The boat is absolutely terrific. The whole trip was wonderful. The deck hand was so helpful. He gave my son tips on how to hook the fish and Tyler reeled in his on fish. We caught a whole bunch of fish that where good size. Ranging from 25 to 40lbs. Jason Mikel (the captain of the Backlash) says, “I strive to have the best Charter Fishing Destin boat and always provide my passengers with an experience that will be cherished”. In my case it was. If you want a great fishing trip in Destin; please be sure to book The Backlash. Do not make John Latham’s mistake!

Spring Optimum for Destin Charter Boat Cobia Fishing

Warmer weather and rising water temperatures signal the beginning of spring migration of cobia…a hard-fighting game-fish. They can be spotted cruising inshore flats and channels along the northern Gulf coast. The cobia show up around mid-March to early April in response to warming surf. While migrating, this species travel northward along the coast of Florida, then westward into Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Water temperature is the key with sixty-eight to seventy degrees being optimum. Your charter boat captain will help you find, and then reel in the prized cobia.

Experienced Destin Charter Boat Captain Key to Successful Cobia Game Fishing

One popular method of fishing for cobia is sight fishing. They can be spotted around markers, ships, and rigs or anything else that can provide cover for them. Once spotted, cast free-lined live sardines, crab, or good sized shrimp out in front of them, using a quality spin casting combo with twenty-thirty pound test line. The only problem with this method is line twist after a couple of battles with the fish. Free spool type reels are often used with heavy jigs in place of live bait. The advantage these have over spinning reels is no line twist. Either way, smooth operation of tackle is imperative. Your charter boat captain can be relied upon to make good recommendations regarding choice of tackle and gear.

Once the Fish is Hooked the Thrill Begins

The cobia is a muscular, powerful fish and a thrilling catch. Once the fish is hooked, expect lots of line to come screaming off the reel. The angler can’t do much more than hang on. They are tough and hard-fighting. Even after the fish is into the boat the battle may not be over. Cobia have been known to damage boats and equipment not to mention injury to the sportsman. The key is to keep the fish under control as you get it into the box using a smooth single motion. Beware of the seven to ten dorsal spines on top of the body that stand erect when the fish is threatened as you are handling or unhooking, ready to gouge anything that gets in their way. Normally these spines are retracted under the skin. Rely on the experience of your charter boat crew to keep you safe resulting in a successful catch.

Cobia is a Prized Catch in More than One Way

The meat of cobia is white, flakey, and very mild tasting and some say that it has a slight lemon flavor (hence, the name lemon fish). If the angler decides to harvest the fish to use for food, the cobia must be netted or gaffed and placed immediately on ice. The first mate on board your Destin charter boat will prepare the fillets and package them for you. A single large fish will provide enough steaks to feed several families. Most recipes that call for a white mild tasting fish are well-suited to cobia meat. Its firm flesh makes it perfect for grilling.

The Amberjack Fish

The Amberjack is a gorgeous fish that harbors an olive or dark colored stripe or bar from the snout through the eye. It goes to the dorsal fin. It also has an amber marking that runs horizontal. This fish is sought after by sports fishermen due to its size and strength. It ranges from forty to over one hundred and forty pounds. It strikes fast and hard. Then it often dives to the bottom. This is a fun fish to catch. When one Amberjack is brought to the boat; other Amberjacks will often follow it to the surface.

How do you catch this fish?

Fishing methods include trolling near the surface with lures, spoons, plugs, jigs or strip baits, and also live bait fishing. The Amberjack fish normally feeds on squid, fish, and crustaceans. However you really need to improve your odds with a charter service like the Backlash that knows the behavior of the Amberjacks. We find it is usually best to fish with live bait deep. The fish is usually found in 60 to 240 feet of water. However juveniles can be found in depths of only 30 feet. They love debris, wrecks, and other natural hiding places.
